Mockingbird

Tomorrow night I’ll be reading some of my poetry at the Raleigh Review’s First Friday Open Mic. I’ll read my poem that’s currently riding the bus and a few others, maybe even some of these poems-a-day.

file000151584494For today’s prompt, write a secret poem. The poem itself could be a secret, or it could be about keeping secrets or, I suppose, not keeping them. Or maybe it’s about a top secret project, or the poem is a riddle with some sort of secret meaning. Or, well, I’ll let you figure out how best to poem secretively.

Mockingbird

As the mockingbird sings
all the songs he knows
always learning more
to keep rivals away
and attract a chanteuse
in his avian heart
he knows the secret
to getting published
is to submit, submit, submit
all the poems you’ve written
and the secret to great poetry
is to always write more.

I’ve heard the same secret applies
to getting human females in bed
but I’m not that brave.
