Bartholomew Barker is an organizer of Living Poetry, a collection of poets in the Triangle region of North Carolina where he has hosted a monthly feedback workshop for more than decade. His first poetry collection, Wednesday Night Regular, written in and about strip clubs, was published in 2013. His second, Milkshakes and Chilidogs, a chapbook of food inspired poetry was served in 2017. He was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2021. Born and raised in Ohio, studied in Chicago, he worked in Connecticut for nearly twenty years before moving to Hillsborough where he lives and writes poetry.

    No, not always right! Some don’t even know what they’re protesting! Some are paid to scream, yell, and jump up and down.

      Note, I wrote “usually” not “always”. Most know what they’re protesting and few are paid. (Get any sufficiently large crowd and you’ll find the inarticulate and sometimes a few infiltrators who really are getting paid.) The vast majority are reacting to injustice just like during the civil rights protests of the 1960’s and the anti-war protests since Vietnam. While I was too young for those movements, I’m proud of all the protests I’ve attended in my life and feel vindicated by history for each.
