Despite my struggles,
they cram me into some costume.
Oh, the indignity.

Bartholomew Barker is one of the organizers of Living Poetry, a collection of poets and poetry lovers in the Triangle region of North Carolina. His first poetry collection, Wednesday Night Regular, written in and about strip clubs, was published in 2013. His second, Milkshakes and Chilidogs, a chapbook of food inspired poetry was served in 2017. He was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2021. Born and raised in Ohio, studied in Chicago, he worked in Connecticut for nearly twenty years before moving to Hillsborough where he makes money as a computer programmer to fund his poetry habit.

  2. Poor Fi͏do! The͏ ca͏ni͏ne͏ conundrum of donni͏ng a͏ Ha͏llowe͏e͏n ge͏tup i͏s truly a͏ comi͏ca͏l ca͏la͏mi͏ty. It’s hi͏la͏ri͏ous how our furry fri͏e͏nds, who should be͏ cha͏si͏ng squi͏rre͏ls a͏nd loungi͏ng i͏n the͏ sun, e͏nd up sque͏e͏ze͏d i͏nto the͏se͏ outla͏ndi͏sh outfi͏ts. So, he͏re͏’s to our four-le͏gge͏d compa͏ni͏ons, the͏ unsung he͏roe͏s of Ha͏llowe͏e͏n hi͏la͏ri͏ty. The͏y ma͏y re͏se͏nt the͏ ruffle͏s a͏nd loa͏the͏ the͏ le͏ota͏rds, but the͏y sure͏ know how to bri͏ng a͏ smi͏le͏ to our fa͏ce͏s, e͏ve͏n whe͏n the͏y’re͏ we͏a͏ri͏ng a͏ frown. It’s a͏ qui͏rky tra͏di͏ti͏on, but i͏t’s one͏ tha͏t re͏mi͏nds us of the͏ joyful, unpre͏di͏cta͏ble͏, a͏nd sli͏ghtly bonke͏rs world we͏ sha͏re͏ wi͏th our furry fa͏mi͏ly me͏mbe͏rs. 👍👌😊

    • I’m sure plenty of dogs love the attention but I’m confident that I can speak for the felines and their desire to end this humiliating tradition. No more costumes for cats!
