I am particularly proud that my poem, Overnight at the Downs, was selected as one of the winners of this summer’s Flapper Press Ekphrastic Poetry Contest. I wrote the poem based on Alistair Little’s painting (shown above) Round & Round.
Many thanks to Flapper Press for choosing my poem and to my fellow poets of the Living Poetry workshop for their fine suggestions which greatly improved my first draft.

Thanks, Lisa! I was wondering if anyone would be confused by my reference to the Racing Form.

This poem is subtle and clever and catches addiction perfectly – continuing doing something, even though you know it harms you.
Most excellent.
The evening after I’d read this I saw an ad. on the telly – placed by ‘Paddy’ betting – advising people to gamble responsibly.
Real message – gamble.

Thanks, Bernie! Yeah, gambling ads are much more common in the UK and Ireland than in the States but as gambling is becoming more legal, I’m sure this will change.
