Fraiku: Pebble

Each year a pebble
added to my cairn
the pilgrim carries a scythe

This Fraiku for the Living Poetry Prompt.

Bartholomew Barker is an organizer of Living Poetry, a collection of poets in the Triangle region of North Carolina where he has hosted a monthly feedback workshop for more than decade. His first poetry collection, Wednesday Night Regular, written in and about strip clubs, was published in 2013. His second, Milkshakes and Chilidogs, a chapbook of food inspired poetry was served in 2017. He was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2021. Born and raised in Ohio, studied in Chicago, he worked in Connecticut for nearly twenty years before moving to Hillsborough where he lives and writes poetry.

    Pebbles Fade into Dust

    Long ago I lay bruised on a pebble beach
    The jagged rocks had cut me deep
    I remained bleeding and afraid
    Beached, my heart remained in pieces

    The old stones are now worn blunt
    Their crusty edges softened by time
    And light ascends from the sandy chasms
    As a shining, filters over scarred fears

    I now see clearly beyond the gravelly shore
    My distant dreams, changing into realities
    I am finished hurdling fences and walls
    My lifelong barriers have been ground into dust
    And a love forever lost serenades my soul with trust
