What’s In Your Go-Bag?
When a tornado drops from the sky or wildfires breach the fence or Fascists march door-to-door looking for Jews, queers and atheists, it’s time to grab the bag by the door and escape.
Mine contains a passport, two pairs of socks, three of underwear, four blue ink pens, five notebooks, six scented candles, seven reference books, eight bottles of wine and the largest and most important— the promise to remain who I am.
Bartholomew Barker is an organizer of Living Poetry, a collection of poets in the Triangle region of North Carolina where he has hosted a monthly feedback workshop for more than decade. His first poetry collection, Wednesday Night Regular, written in and about strip clubs, was published in 2013. His second, Milkshakes and Chilidogs, a chapbook of food inspired poetry was served in 2017. He was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2021. Born and raised in Ohio, studied in Chicago, he worked in Connecticut for nearly twenty years before moving to Hillsborough where he lives and writes poetry.
I only had go bags when I was pregnant or had to go to the hospital for some other reason.
I love that first stanza. You forgot Gypsies though or Romani/Roma. Maybe some others. Don’t need all, some works. Like the list. It’s very specific. Bordering on OCD. I enjoyed that.
