Vacation

For today’s prompt from Robert Lee Brewer’s Write Better Poetry blog, write a city poem. You can make the title of your poem the name of a city and write your poem. Or you can mention a city in your poem. And, of course, you can just set your poem in a city without naming which one it is. It’s also okay, if you’re more rurally inclined, to just write a poem about them city slickers. As always, have fun with it.

Vacation

Beaches are boring and burning
sweaty gritty salty dumps
Mountains are treacherous
exhausting frozen death traps
For my next vacation send
me to a city with a subway

I will ride beneath the streets
with the regular rhythm of rails
the muffled voice of the driver
over cheap train speakers
even the screech of steel wheels
around sharp turns is music

A Metro or the U-Bahn
an El or the Underground
give me an Art Deco map
of brightly colored lines
stations marked like pearls
on the city’s necklace
