Living Poetry Book Club Meeting Minutes, April 4, 2022
Angela, our hostess, has carved this elegant garden
from a suburban wilderness— laid out a fine spread
of finger food and fancy soda water for our discussion,
this bright blue first Sunday in April.
We have a civilized debate on the merits
of C. K. Williams‘ collection Repair,
surrounded by forsythia and bumble bees
doing their good work— all very polite— despite
the cardinals flashing through the trees
like my annoyance at his long lines of prose
pawned off as poetry. Even the blind cat catches
a whiff of his obtuse intellectualisms
and yawns. A bee take a break to dance on my nose,
taunting me with Spring, with a world bubbling
and I want to release my inner Bukowski—
punch my buddy Carlo square in the mouth,
kick Dylan in the balls,
kiss both Angela and Moira
flush on the lips—
rip off my shirt and run
through the sunsplendid grass
Find a copse of trees to climb
drink from a brook with muddy hands
sharpen some flint
shave out the gray
from my beard— I don’t care
if I leave scabs
It’s Spring!
I was young once
and I might not be again
This is why you should never serve wine at a poetry book club meeting
and why I’ll never win a Pulitzer.

Bart,
I want to know if you just composed this today? It’s so well-constructed and yet inspired by Spring and spontaneous at the same time. It’s gorgeous I think. A great romp with stomping on the big names in victory for all us little ones. What fun!!

Thanks! It was inspired Sunday, a few of the lines came to me Monday afternoon and it finally got written down Monday evening.

I just performed that poem at a Zoom open mic and pulled my shirt off at the appropriate place. They don’t give Pulitzers to guys who read topless.
