Fanatics!

I’ll be at the Carolina RailHawks match tonight so I thought I’d post a poem I wrote for my fellow Triangle Soccer Fanatics a few years ago.

Triangle Soccer Fanatics

Fanatics!

Small children plug their ears
When they walk past our section.
Quieter fans listen bemused
But the players love our singing.
Urging them forward,
Begging them to pass…
Pass…
Cross!
Shoot!!

damnit

Loudmouth fanatics with advanced degrees
Stand behind the goal hurling abuse
At the hated opposition
Then chanting encouragement for our boys.
Urging them forward,
Begging them to pass…
Pass…
Cross!
Shoot!!

damnit

The drums pound the cadence.
The vuvuzela cries our passion.
The flags held high declare
Our allegiance to the team.
Urging them forward,
Begging them to pass…
Pass…
Cross!
Shoot!!

And in that eternal moment
We watch the ball
Curve away from the keeper.
We gasp.
It hits the back of the net
And we erupt in an orgasmic roar
With orange streamers.
